Dr. Anna L. Scharfen

Dr. Anna Scharfen is excited to be returning to California and joining her husband in the Bay Area.  She is looking forward to becoming an active member of the community and spending her free time outdoors trail running and competing in triathlons.  Dr. Scharfen grew up in a Marine Corps family and called many places home, including San Diego, California, McLean, Virginia, and Frankfurt, Germany.

Dr. Scharfen received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Neuroscience from Pomona College in 2009.  She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California Los Angeles in 2014.  Dr. Scharfen completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York in 2018.  She cared for a diverse population and became skilled in the treatment of dentofacial disorders, trauma, benign pathology, in-office sedation, and dentoalveolar procedures. In 2020, Dr. Scharfen was accepted as a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, reaching highest level of certification within the field of oral surgery.

Dr. Scharfen spent the year before dental school working for the Oral Health Program at the Pan American Health Organization (a regional branch of the W.H.O.).  As the coordinator of the Caries Free Communities Initiative, Dr. Scharfen traveled to Caribbean and South American countries to host train-the-trainer workshops on caries prevention.  She developed a passion for public health, specifically in the area of increasing access to dental care in underserved populations.
